Events under GSA initiative

GSA orientation

Overview

Google Student Ambassador program orientation was the first campus activity under GSA's several events. The volunteers drew more than 50 flyers and showcased in the whole college campus. Exceeding the accommodation capacity, the event registered more than 250 students. Throughout the program as organizers, I and my team made sure we listen more from participants about their expectations and ideas. My team gave information about the program and showed many videos of Google and the opportunities for the students. I led the activities of the orientation. The games made everyone stand and shout with enthusiasm. The guess games included a quick slide of the icons, one-line description of the service, a picture of key people from Google. Every team received points for correct answers and received stickers.

Agenda

  • What is GSA Program?
  • Upcoming events in the academic year 2014-2015
  • Opportunities to learn and become an active member of Google student club
  • Overview of Google as a company. The history, current status in the market and technology, office locations
  • What Google offers to students. Google intership and activity video sessions.
  • Google product quiz between four teams consisting 60 members each.

Impact

Students enthusiastically participated in all the activities throughout the year. My team received volunteer request for activities before activity schedules. The continuous updates on the meetup page of GSA program helped students to know more about what technical events are happening in the city. More than 30 students attended various talks and workshops at Pune's Google developers group. Networking with tech people helped them to know more about upcoming and trending technologies.

Android Workshop

Overview
Shrreya Bhatachaarya, the GSA of our college organized a hands on Android workshop. In the 2-day workshop each student developed a mobile app for android operating system. The first day of the workshop students got familiar with the platform and syntax. Coding is all about logic and practice. Knowing right refrence sources to keep coding is very important. The second was more like a hackathon where students used there own ideas to solve a problem using an app.

Impact

Many students sent thanking letters and positive feedbacks for the workshop. The easiest way to learn something new is to be comfortable with its prerequisites and history. If you know why are you studying and what you will achieve from that, it motivates you to keep going. Having enough confidence in basics helps you to solve complicated problems. Students tweeted their first Android app and began the journey of coding.
